- Next-generation platform brings advanced fluidics, intelligent ultrasound delivery, advanced anterior vitrectomy, and streamlined workflow to cataract surgery.
- The European launch follows Virtuoso’s CE Mark certification under the European Union Medical Device Regulation and its presentation at ESCRS 2026
WALTHAM, Mass., September 9th, 2026 — BVI, a leading global ophthalmic device company, today announced the commercial launch of Virtuoso across Europe as part of its debut at the 2026 European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) Congress in London.
Virtuoso is BVI’s next-generation phacoemulsification platform, designed to enhance fluidics stability, ultrasound energy delivery, anterior vitrectomy, and workflow efficiency. Developed in close collaboration with surgeons, the system addresses the evolving demands of modern cataract surgery by bringing advanced technology and intuitive usability together within a single integrated platform.
At the center of the platform is Equality Fluidics Control, a proprietary intraocular pressure management system designed to actively maintain the target IOP throughout the varying procedure steps. This is complemented by Resolute™ Load-Sensing Energy Optimizer, which is designed to optimize energy delivery regardless of lens resistance, supporting consistent phacoemulsification performance across varying lens densities.
Virtuoso also incorporates Velvet Vitrectomy Probe, introducing dual cut/port and dual pneumatic technologies to anterior vitrectomy. By combining synchronous cutting and aspiration with optimized fluidic control, Velvet is designed to help minimize retinal traction while supporting efficient vitreous removal during anterior segment procedures.. It also features EasyFit All-at-Once Setup simplifies operating room preparation by enabling simultaneous setup and priming of the phaco and irrigation aspiration handpieces, helping improve procedural efficiency.
“Virtuoso reflects years of close collaboration with surgeons around the world and represents an important step forward in BVI’s commitment to advancing cataract surgery,” said Andy Chang, Chief Commercial Officer at BVI. “The platform brings together advanced fluidics designed to maintain stable intraocular pressure, consistent ultrasound energy delivery across varying lens densities, enhanced anterior vitrectomy performance, and a streamlined setup and workflow, all designed to give surgeons greater control, consistency and efficiency throughout the procedure.”
The European launch follows Virtuoso’s CE Mark certification under the European Union Medical Device Regulation and its upcoming presentation at ESCRS 2026, where surgeons experienced the platform through hands-on demonstrations, wet labs, educational sessions and peer-to-peer clinical discussions.
“Virtuoso delivers the combination of chamber stability, responsive fluidics and consistent energy delivery that you want during cataract surgery. The novel fluidics consists of a pressure and volume pump working in series, an unprecedented approach that enhances the respective performance of each while mitigating their individual drawbacks,” added Tommaso Rossi, MD, FEBO. “The platform is intuitive to use and integrates naturally into the surgical workflow, helping create a smooth and efficient experience in the operating room.”
Virtuoso also incorporates vitreoretinal capabilities for anterior, posterior and combined procedures, providing additional flexibility for multi-specialty centers and surgical environments.
